Inez Spangler dreads a hospital stay as much as any patient, but she said a new in-room information and entertainment option at Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe makes her time there more bearable.

"I just wasn't aware of the options," Spangler said from her hospital bed Thursday. "It's especially wonderful at night when all of your guests have gone home and there's nothing to do."

Spangler agreed to allow Glenwood to demonstrate its Skylight Healthcare Systems in her room. Though the system has been in place at Glenwood for more than a year, hospital and Skylight officials conducted a public rollout of Skylight on Thursday.

"This increases patient satisfaction and is part of the healing process itself," Glenwood Chief Executive Ron Elder.

Every TV in every room has access to Skylight, which includes health education videos, relaxation videos, interactive patient surveys, hospital and room orientation and even premium movies.

"It's the kind of a premium entertainment package you'd see at a nice hotel," said David Schofield, chief executive of Skylight, which is based in San Diego.

Schofield said 70 U.S. hospitals have installed the Skylight system. Glenwood is the only hospital in the region that has Skylight.

"It's a big investment by Glenwood to drive patient satisfaction," Schofield said.

Elder declined to say how much the hospital has invested in the system but did say Glenwood has a five-year contract with the company.
